Blue lace agate is a variegated chalcedony and quartz known for its light blue banded layers. It has a mohs hardness of 6.5-7. The darker the blue coloring of the agate means that it originated deeper within the mine. Only about 30% of the world's blue lace agate weighs over 1kg and the majority of pieces are small. Namibian blue lace agate (the original blue lace agate) comes from a hydrothermal vein deposit with Jurassic dolerite that intruded into a Permian marine deposit giving it its traditional blue color.
Blue lace agate was first found in Namibia in 1962 and was hand mined into the 1970s. Very small deposits have been found since then in Kenya, Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul region), Madagascar, and the United States (Oregon and Montana) however the other localities also typically have other mineral inclusions which often cause green and purple colorations. The Namibian mine closed in 2016 making it harder to find blue lace agate pieces.
Blue lace agate is considered a stone of the diplomat and helps create increased positive communication, increased clarity, and increased confidence. Blue lace agate can be used to help enhance verbal affirmations. It also is said to help inspire loyalty and trustworthiness.
